Download a copy here – CSTA CENSUS 2025. The aim of the Census is to provide an overview of the container self-storage sector, highlightin trends in different aspects of the business. It is intended to give operators and other stakeholders valuable benchmarking insight – and to help operators position themselves more strategically, in terms of pricing, site size, services and future investment decisions.

The Census confirms that the UK container self-storage sector continues to grow steadily year on year. “Census 25” data indicates that, at June 2025, there are 652 operators of Container Self-Storage facilities and 1212 sites, providing a total of 111,500 self-storage containers.

The Report’s findings show that operators are expanding both in their footprint and their services. There are new operator entrants, while some existing operators are opening additional sites and increasing container stocks.

Operators report increased customer tenures and strong occupancy rates, evidently managing economic pressures and customer expectations.

Looking ahead to the rest of this year and into 2026, the industry is likely to see further growth through new entrants, as well as through industry consolidation. Operators will continue to invest in site infrastructure, new containers, facility automation. And the successful operators will endeavour to enhance the “customer experience”, so as to differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market.

The Census has been prepared using data and research undertaken from April-June 2025. The data has been collected from responses to a questionnaire sent to Self-Storage operators throughout the UK – both CSTA Members and non-Members – as well as through research undertaken by phone, email and through company websites.
